How to optimize your website for best results in Google

If you want your website to do well in the search engines, the two main things to bear in mind are that your site should have good content and it should look natural. Google no longer rewards sites that are over-optimized, that is, where the site owner has gone overboard and implemented all the SEO techniques that we've read about on the Internet.

What Google wants you to do is to forget about SEO tactics and give your visitors a great user experience. Make them glad they found your site. Instead of SEO tricks, just set up the site the way you naturally would if you'd never heard of search engine optimization.

It is no longer acceptable to "over-optimize" your site but on the other hand, there are some BASIC PRINCIPLES which are worth bearing in mind as part of creating a great web page. And that's what this is about.

ONE KEYWORD PER PAGE, ONE PAGE PER KEYWORD

I've long recommended that people write one page per topic - and only one topic per page.

Another way to say that is... one main keyword per page, and one page per keyword.

Doing this keeps your site well organized (Google likes that - and so do your visitors!) by putting all the content about a particular subject in one place, with links to pages that deal with other related topics.

TITLE

The title is what appears in the blue bar at the very top of the screen. Use your main keyword in your title.

Instead of writing Home as the title (and you see that quite often), it's a good idea to use your main keyword in the page title.

Of course, also write a few other words because this line of text is what gets printed as the clickable blue link in the search results. So it's okay to be a little bit "salesy" too, along with using your primary keyword phrase. The keyword helps Google know what you are saying your page is about. The "salesy" words help motivate people to click on your link instead of somebody else's. They act like a silent salesman for your site.

Also worth remembering. Give each page a unique title. Every page is about something different so give each page its own distinctive title.

META DESCRIPTION

The meta description tag is where you write 1-2 sentences saying what your site is about. So it makes obvious good sense to include your web page's main keyword in the description. Putting it near the beginning of your description is a good idea too. But again, avoid keyword stuffing and remember to be a little bit of a salesman in what you write. The search engines wont necessarily use what you write, but they might so spend a little time here.

META KEYWORDS

The meta keywords tag is where you can list the page's keywords. Again, don't overdo it. Just listing a bunch of keywords without using them on your page will not help you at all. In fact, it might harm you. So just be natural here. Like the description, search engines may not use this keywords list but if they do you want this to be a plus for your site, not a negative.

UNIQUE VALUABLE CONTENT (IMPORTANT)

Today, more than ever, Google is rewarding quality content. Their algorithm is now also able to detect if an article is just a slight variation of other articles they already know about.

Article spinning is a technique where {alternatives|variations} of words are {listed|supplied} and when the article spinning software creates the article it will randomly select one of the available options at each point. But basically the meaning is the same and anyone who reads both articles will quickly realize they have read something very similar to that before. So, Google is actively working to remove these low quality "spun" articles from the search results.

On the other hand, UNIQUE articles which present interesting content... these are going to be rewarded! It really is worth taking the time to write something brand new and worth reading (or you can hire a professional writer).

The main takeaway here: be sure your site delivers helpful material because...
1, this will serve your website visitors and they might even Like your site in Facebook or Share it in their social circles,
2, other site owners may choose to link to your site because it's so good (and Google counts each incoming link as a popularity vote for your site - the more the merrier), and
3, the search engine spiders such as Googlebot will identify your site's quality content and may reward you with improved listings.

ARTICLE LENGTH

For the main article on your home page, I'd recommend somewhere between 400 and 600 words.

Longer than that is going to be fine too. I read of a case study of websites on page one and they concluded that long text is good. The British SEO chap doing the research concluded that 2000 words was a good minimum length for your home page. If that's a bit out of reach for you, please don't settle for a few short paragraphs. Not if you aspire to be on the first page!

Sites that use a lot of graphics on their home page would be well advised to supplement them with a solid chunk of text. You can put the text below the graphics but don't try to get away with just a sentence or two. I don't think that's going to fly.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

Spelling errors and low quality content tend to go together. So if spelling is not one of your strong points, it's worth taking a minute to copy and paste your article into SpellJax.com or any of the other online spell checkers. SpellJax is a free online spellchecker - it is very similar to Gmail's built-in spellchecker so there's an extra advantage.

HEADINGS

In the same way that books and newspapers use headings and subheadings, it's good practice to do the same thing with your web pages.

The most important heading will be "marked up" as H1, which is short for Heading1 and it is designed to show that this is the most important heading on the page... this is the topic the page is supposed to be about. You only need one h1 headline per page. Put your page's main keyword inside H1 tags.

Then you can add various subheadings under that. They are marked up as H2 (or h2 - upper case or lower case doesn't matter here). You can have multiple subheadings, as we have on this page. These days I would not include the main keyword in any h2 tags, to avoid any possible over-optimization penalty.

On the other hand, if there are related terms which you might naturally use as a subheading, go ahead. The thing to avoid is keyword stuffing, which is the artificial overuse of keywords on a page. That will do you more harm than good these days, as search engines get smarter at detecting such things.

Below your h2 subheadings, you may wish to have other sub-subheadings in H3, H4, H5 and H6, but these aren't used very much so you can probably forget about them if you like.

KEYWORD DENSITY

Keyword density is just a fancy name for how often you use a particular word on a page. If your page has 100 words and you use your keyword once, that's a keyword density of one percent. Simple enough concept.

And by the way, a "keyword" can be multiple words. I wish it was called a "keyword phrase" to avoid confusion - but it isn't.

Now it's natural that your keyword would be used multiple times in a decent discussion of your topic, but don't overdo it by needlessly repeating the terms again and again. That's called keyword stuffing. And it's a no-no.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...

We've covered the main bases in the "on page SEO" game but if you want to take it further, other issues to consider are...
* text decoration - the limited use of bolding, underlines and italics. Again, don't overdo it.
* use images to make the site more interesting. (Yes, I should add some images here.) You can use a keyword or a similar term to name your images but again, don't overdo it. Be natural. Don't try to manipulate the search engines - it wont work.
* internal navigation. Make your site easy to get around. The important pages should all be easily accessible from your home page. Use text links rather than graphics to link between the pages of your site.
* a site map is a great idea. Link to it from your home page.
