What You Need To Know About The Radiant Barrier

A very effective way to keep heat out of structures is by installing a material known as a radiant barrier. These are sheets placed in attics or rooftops that deflect heat. These are also effective in cooling different parts of the structure in such a way that you will have little or no need for cooling appliances.

Thin, reflective materials generally make most of the sheet matter. Depending on the model of the product, you may find sheets composed mainly of either craft paper, plywood, or plastic coated with aluminum on either a single side or two. Other models may have fiber in between layers to make these tough, yet easy to manage.

These insulating materials work in two ways. First, the reflective aluminum, when placed properly underneath the roof, bends back some of the incoming heat from the sun. Second, since the material underneath the reflective side is generally cooler, the temperature that is emitted from the insulator to the rest of the house is lower.

Hence, in installing this material, all you need to do is to install the reflective side face-up. To keep these in place, you may either have these stapled on previously-installed insulation or attach them to rafters to fix them under the roof.

For the sheets to work the way these should, you need an air gap between the roof and insulating material and a vent to allow the water vapor to escape. Perforated sheets and exhaust fans in some areas are things you need to allow moisture to escape.

A barrier, when properly installed, would block approximately 95 percent of heat and reduce house temperature by around 30 degrees. An attic left vacant, for instance, may become an extra bedroom or storage room that may be used by its dwellers. A comfortable house may not need to rely on air conditioning systems on warm days or nights.

Although a radiant barrier is generally composed of simple materials, it is packed with a capacity of maintaining comfortable room temperature. It is what a cool and comfortable building should have. Radiant Barrier
